FROM THE OUTSIDE IN: DESIGNING BETTER BOOKS: This lecture by Reg Beatty introduces the questions any would-be book designer must ask and eventually answer – about format, layout, and type choice. Through an examination of actual books and a review of the current literature on the subject participants will understand good book design.
Reg Beatty is a visiting bookbinder and book artist from Toronto who writes and lectures on book culture. His work has been exhibited in Italy, France, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the US, and across Canada. He trained with Don Taylor and Betsy Eldridge in Toronto and Louise Genest in Montreal and has a degree in Fine Arts from York University. Currently, he teaches book design at York University and book arts at OCAD. Sponsored by the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild (CBBAG) and the Friends of UVic Libraries.

Victorian Poetry and the New Print Media: An Exhibition for Eng 551 will run from May 31 to August 31, 2010 in the Archives and Special Collections Reading Room (A005) in the McPherson Library/Mearns Centre at the University of Victoria. The exhibit highlights the primary content used in Eng 551, a Graduate Seminar taught in the 2010 Winter Session by Dr. Alison Chapman, a Victorian poetry specialist with UVic’s English Department. On display are primary works used for each week of the seminar, providing a window into the world of the poetry and print media of this remarkable period. Hours are 10:30-4:30 Monday to Friday throughout the summer.
